Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball travels to Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Wednesday, April 19, for a 3 p.m. contest against Sacred Heart University at Veteran's Park.
 
UMass is 5-22 overall after falling in game three to Richmond on Sunday afternoon, while the Sacred Heart holds a 16-16 overall record, including a 7-2 record at home. The Pioneers are coming off a 10-5 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, and will compete against Fordham on Tuesday, April 18.
 
Recap in a Minute
Massachusetts dropped the series with Richmond, 2-1, with the Minutemen winning game two, 9-5. It marked the first Atlantic 10 Conference triumph of the season for UMass.
 
In game two of the series, Kevin Skagerlind and Carter Hanson had three hits apiece, including a double each and a home run from Hanson. Will MacLean tallied two hits with a double and a homer of his own. Six Minutemen registered one hit on the day, which included Sam Hill's double. Skagerlind, MacLean and Hanson recorded two RBI apiece, as Steve Luttazi and Hanson added two runs on the afternoon. Zack Zaetta, Skagerlind, MacLean, Nolan Tichy and Jake Given all contributed a run to UMass' total.
 
Max LeBlanc (1-2) earned his first triumph of the season for the Minutemen, allowing no runs, three hits and walking three to go along with a season-high matching four strikeouts in four innings of work.
 
All-Time vs. Sacred Heart
The Minutemen lead the all-time series against the Pioneers, 8-1, as the two teams meet for the 10th time. The two programs first met on April 11, 2001, in Amherst, with UMass defeating Sacred Heart, 8-6. Massachusetts and Sacred heart met last season for a midweek contest, as the Minutemen came out on top, 7-4.

It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 17 home runs in 27 games played, from seven Minutemen. Hanson leads the production with five, followed closely by Tichy with four. MacLean and Luttazi recorded three and two, respectively, so far, while Mike Gervasi, Hill and Ryan Coleman have one apiece.
 
Hanson recorded his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season at Navy, before adding another in the game three of the UNC Asheville series. Coleman garnered his first career homer in game one at UNC Asheville, while Hill registered his first home run in game three of at UNC Asheville. Luttazi and MacLean had their first of the season in the Navy series in game three and game two, respectively. Gervasi had his first homer in game one of the Penn series, as Tichy garnered his first of the season in game three at Penn.

On A Roll…
Seven Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. MacLean and Hanason sit atop the leaderboard with eight each, while Luttazi has five games. Tichy and Skagerlind tallied two apiece, and both Gervasi and Given are riding a one-contest streak.   
 
MacLean is on a current 11-game reached base streak, as Hanson follows with eight. Luttazi recorded five straight games with a reached base streak, while Zaetta, Skagerlind and Tichy have two each. Gervasi and Given both have one game with a reached base streak. Zaetta holds the teams' longest streak with a total of 13 games, before that came to an end. Both MacLean (11) and Tichy's (10) consecutive game totals are the teams' second and third longest, respectively, with MacLean's being the longest current streak.

[Multi]ple Games
UMass has a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have run their total of multi-hit performances to 49. Luttazi leads the production with 11, which included three three-hit contests and one four hit game. Zaetta and MacLean follow with eight apiece, as Hanson registered seven. Tichy totaled five, including two four-hit contests. Gervasi and Michael Toth tallied three apiece, while Chris Pearsons, Jacob Sloss, Skagerlind and Hill all contributed one each to UMass' multi-hit total.
 
Massachusetts has also contributed a total of 26 multi-RBI games, led by Hanson with six. Tichy and Luttazi followed with four apiece, including one three-run contest from Luttazi. Gervasi has three, while both MacLean and Skagerlind have garnered two multi-RBI contests. Five other Minutemen have tallied one game each, with a three-run contest from Sloss.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2023 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 140th season. Twenty-one members of the team are back from the 2022 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including nine freshman, one sophomore and four transfers.
 
Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
 
On Deck
Massachusetts travels to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Friday, April 21 through Sunday, April 23, for a three-game A-10 series against Saint Joseph's. Friday's contest begins at 3 p.m., before a 2 p.m. start time on Saturday. The series finale is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday. Both Friday and Sunday's games will be streamed on ESPN+, at Smithson Field.
