Massachusetts Falls To Boston College In First Round Of Hockey East Tournament, 5-2
March 08, 2023 | Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 9 seed University of Massachusetts hockey was unable to recover from a 2-0 first period deficit, falling to No. 8 seed Boston College 5-2 on Wednesday night at Kelley Rink. The Minutemen end the 2022-23 campaign at 13-17-5, while the Eagles advance to the Hockey East Quarterfinals with a record of 14-15-6.
"This game to finish the year, kind of summed up our whole year, just a microcosm," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We gave up some pretty soft goals and didn't create enough offense, which was pretty consistent the whole year."
BC opened the scoring just 1:08 into the contest, Cutter Gauthier and Andre Gasseau fed Marshall Warren at the left point and Warren sent a low shot through traffic that found the back of the UMass net.
The Eagles doubled their lead at the 17:07 mark as Eamon Powell cleaned up a Cam Burke rebound at the post.
Sophomore Taylor Makar put the Minutemen on the board 18:41 into the first with his team leading 10th goal of the season, rocketing home a booming one-timer from freshman Mikey Adamson and sophomore Lucas Mercuri on the rush.
Boston College would regain its two-goal cushion in the final minute of the period, however. Gauthier and Nikita Nesterenko set up Gasseau for the finish alone in the slot at 19:45.
The Eagles increased their advantage to 4-1 when Nesterenko picked a corner from just inside the UMass blueline at the 9:11 mark of the second period with Gauthier collecting his second assist of the evening.
The Minutemen opened the third period by closing the gap back to two with Ryan Ufko tucking a shot in under the cross bar from the blue line 22 seconds into the frame. Boston College was quick to respond, though, with Nesterenko netting his second of the night with the teams skating 4x4 at the 3:12 mark.
The Eagles finished with a 42-18 advantage in shots on goal, while going 0-for-2 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-3.
Cole Brady totaled 37 saves for the Minutemen and Mitch Benson stopped 16 in net for BC.
