Massachusetts Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader At Navy

Minutemen record a 4-2 victory in game one and a 14-3 win in game two of the doubleheader against Midshipmen on Saturday.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball picked up a pair of road victories at Navy on Saturday at Max Bishop Field, taking down the Midshipmen in a 4-2 doubleheader opener and capping the day with a 14-3 win.
UMass improved to 2-0 on the year, while Navy dropped to 3-7 overall.
The Minutemen and Midshipmen conclude the three-game series on Sunday, March 5, at 1 p.m., on ESPN+.
Game 1
Massachusetts 4, Navy 2 (7 innings)
Carter Hanson and Will MacLean led the team with two RBI apiece, as MacLean hit a two RBI double to tie the game and Hanson hit a two-run homer to give UMass the lead. Nolan Tichy and Chris Pearsons tallied two hits each, while Kevin Skagerlind and Michael Toth each had one hit, with Toth recording his first collegiate hit. Along with MacLean, Pearsons registered a double. Ryan Coleman, Pearsons, Hanson and Toth all totaled one run.
After a scoreless two and a half innings, Navy crossed the plate first in the bottom of the third as the runner advanced from third on a wild pitch. With a runner on second, the Midshipmen singled to left field, allowing the runner to score, to lead 2-0.
Navy remained ahead through the fourth inning, before MacLean stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second and no outs in the top of the fifth. MacLean doubled to right center field, knocking in Toth and Coleman to bring the contest to a 2-2 draw. The Minutemen's defense held Navy runners on third and second in the bottom of the fifth, as Dylan Terwilliger had back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
In the sixth, Pearsons singled up the middle, before Hanson hit a home run to right field, putting the Minutemen up 4-2. Massachusetts maintained its lead throughout the final frame to pick up its first win of the season.
Terwilliger (1-0) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out three, to earn his first collegiate win. Jackson Harrigan entered for the final two innings, picking up his first save as a Minuteman. Harrigan tallied on strikeout on the day. Nolan Jorgenson (0-1) took the loss for Navy, giving up two runs on three hits and dealing two strikeouts.
Game 2
Massachusetts 14, Navy 3 (9 innings)
Mike Gervasi contributed a team-leading three hits, adding two runs and two RBI. Hanson, Jacob Sloss and Steve Luttazi with two hits apiece, as Sloss led with three RBI and Luttazi contributing two RBI. Hanson had four runs, with Gervasi and MacLean adding two each. MacLean registered the only homerun for UMass in the contest, while Gervasi, Sam Hill and Sloss, each registered one double.
Both teams were scoreless in first two innings, but MacLean opened the third inning with a homer to right field to put the Minutemen up 1-0. With two outs and two runners on base, Pearsons came across the dish on a passed ball, extending UMass' lead, 2-0. Massachusetts scored two more runs on back-to-back walks with bases loaded, holding on to a 4-0 lead.
The Minutemen tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, with a two-run double to right field from Sloss, allowing both Gervasi and Hanson to touch home plate. UMass added one more run in the fifth, as Gervasi doubled down the left field line, bringing in Kyle Hoog.
In the bottom of the sixth, Navy hit an RBI double as the Minutemen lead, 7-1, before a single up the middle for the Midshipmen allowed two more runs to make it a 7-3 contest. UMass turned a double play to get the final out of the sixth and maintain its lead.
A single from Gervasi brought in MacLean to make it 8-1, before back-to-back singles from Sloss and Luttazi helped Gervasi and Hanson cross the plate to lead 10-3 in the seventh inning. In the final frame, Massachusetts earned four more runs to extend its lead and bring the game to its final score of 14-3.
Taylor Perrett (1-0) picked up his first win in a Massachusetts uniform, allowing only two hits with no runs, one walk and striking out three, through five complete innings. Navy's Matthew Shirah had the loss, giving up four runs on as many hits, walking five and registering three strikeouts in three innings.
UMass improved to 2-0 on the year, while Navy dropped to 3-7 overall.
