Baseball Topped By Wichita State, 12-2, In Game One

The Minutemen and Shockers prepare for game two of the series on Saturday, March 25.
Zack Zaetta and Will MacLean led the Minutemen with two hits and one RBI apiece. Mike Gervasi, Steve Luttazi, Jacob Sloss and Sam Hill all registered on hit, including a double each from Luttazi and Hill. Zaetta and Hill scored the two runs for UMass.
Zaetta started off the first inning with a single to left center field, before stealing second. Zaetta advanced to third with groundball from Gervasi. MacLean hit a single to right center field, allowing Zaetta to cross the plate to give UMass the 1-0 lead.
Wichita State tied up the game in the third on a triple, scoring the runner from second. The Shockers took a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly to left field, before tacking on another run in the fourth. Wichita State grabbed three more in the fifth and four in the sixth to extend its lead to 10-1.
In the top of the seventh frame, Hill led off with a double, and advanced to third after tagging up on a fly out. Zaetta stepped up and hit an RBI single through the right side to make it a 10-2 contest. The Shockers notched two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, ending the contest with its final score of 12-2.
Max LeBlanc (0-1) took the loss for Massachusetts, throwing 3.1 innings. LeBlanc gave up three runs on four hits, walked two and struck out two. Clark Candiotti (2-2) went six complete innings, allowing only one run on six hits, walking one and dealing nine strikeouts, to earn the win for Wichita State.
Massachusetts and Wichita State square off for game two on Saturday, March 25, at 3 p.m., at Eck Stadium. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
