Boston College Skates Past Massachusetts Hockey, 3-1
February 18, 2023 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey and Boston College headed into the third period tied at one, but the Eagles managed to pull away with a pair of tallies in the final stanza to hand UMass a 3-1 setback at the Mullins Center on Saturday night. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 10-15-5 overall (4-13-3 HE), while BC improves to 12-12-6 (7-6-5 HE).
"I thought for two periods, I really liked our game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We take a penalty late in the second period and they score a bit of a fluke goal, but I was pretty confident that we were going to come out and find a way to win in the third and it was far from that. We've just got to stick together, keep grinding it out. It's been a rough year, but trust me, we're learning from it.
UMass opened the scoring 8:33 into the first period when freshman Michael Cameron tipped home Kenny Connors' shot from the blueline for his ninth tally of the season. Sophomore Scott Morrow picked up the secondary assist, his 20th helper of the year.
BC managed to knot the score at 1-1 in the final minute of the second. With the Eagles on a power play, Trevor Kuntar floated a redirection from Cutter Gauthier and Andre Gasseau over Cole Brady at the net front at the 19:39 mark.
Kuntar added his second of the night 6:35 into the third period to break the tie, collecting an outlet pass from Gasseau, skating in alone on Brady and tucking the puck in at the far post.
Connor Joyce gave the Eagles an insurance tally at the 9:45 mark of the third from Marshall Warren and Mike Posma.
Boston College finished with a 31-25 advantage in shots and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-4. Mitch Benson totaled 24 saves for the Eagles and Brady stopped 28 for the Minutemen.
Massachusetts will return to action next Friday, February 24, for its final home game of the 2022-23 regular season, when the squad will play host to No. 16 Northeastern at 7 p.m., which will be Senior Night for the Minutemen.
