Minutewomen Defeated By Maine, 69-48

ORONO, Maine – The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team fell to Maine on Sunday afternoon at The Pit at Memorial Gym, 69-48. The Minutewomen (1-2 Overall) were led offensively by 15 points from Stefanie Kulesza, who scored 11 of her team-leading 15 points in the fourth quarter.
Kulesza finished 6-of-10 from the field on the afternoon, including going 6-of-7 to end the game while adding four rebounds. Bre Bellamy hauled in a team-leading six boards and added 11 points on 5-of-9 from the field.
UMass fell behind early after a 12-2 Maine run saw the Black Bears take a double-digit lead halfway into the first quarter. The Black Bears stretched their advantage to 23-7 after converting on 10 of their previous 11 shots.
The Minutewomen strung together a 7-0 scoring run stretching between the first and second quarters to trim the Maine lead to single figures after Kristin Williams knocked down the first UMass triple of the day to make it a 23-14 contest. Maine answered with a 9-0 scoring run to build its then largest lead of the day at 35-18 with just under two minutes to go in the half. UMass shot 43-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes while Maine shot 49-percent while converting on five of its final six shots in the first half to lead 42-22 at the break.
UMass opened the second half on an 8-0 run, capped off by a Kulesza layup on the fast break off a Williams assist to make it a 42-30 contest. The Minutewomen held the Black Bears without a point or made field goal for the first 6:06 of the third quarter.
Maine used a 12-0 run as part of a larger 17-3 stretch across the third and fourth quarters to build its lead to 59-33 early in the fourth.
The Minutewomen return home to the Mullins Center on Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip against Harvard.
