#14 Massachusetts Hockey Falls To Vermont, 6-2

November 11, 2023 | Hockey

AMHERST – No. 14 University of Massachusetts hockey began the contest with a 2-0 lead, but Vermont scored six unanswered to defeat the Minutemen, 6-2 on Saturday night at the Mullins Center. The loss leaves UMass at 6-3-1 on the year, 2-2-1 in Hockey East, while the Catamounts improve to 3-4-1, 2-3-1 in league action.

"That was a flip-flop of last night," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought we came out, had a good first period and got up 2-0. I liked the way we were playing and then we immediately take an undisciplined penalty in the offensive zone and give them life. I feel like if we could have held them off the scoreboard in the first period maybe they don't go into the intermission with some life. I give them credit, they played the way that they should, we needed some saves in the second period and once they got a big lead, they did a really good job of defending and staying above the puck. I thought we created chances and we could've shortened the lead, but their goaltender was obviously a lot better than ours tonight. That was a big factor."

UMass opened the scoring 14:39 into the first period as freshman Aydar Suniev cleaned up a rebound from sophomore Owen Murray at the back post with junior Ryan Ufko picking up the secondary helper.

The Minutemen then increased their advantage to 2-0 with freshman Dans Locmelis converting on the power play 18:39 into the first. Off a Murray shot from the blueline, Locmelis backhanded home the loose puck for his second tally of the season, while junior Scott Morrow earned the secondary assist for his 10th of the year.

Vermont cut its deficit in half just before the intermission. Joel Määttä tipped in a power play goal from Will Zapernick and Jérémie Bucheler at the top of the crease with 14 seconds remaining in the first.

The Catamounts then tied the score 3:48 into the second as Bucheler collected a pass from Nick Ahern and Timofei Spitserov, drove to the net and tucked his attempt in behind netminder Michael Hrabal.

Jens Richards gave UVM a 3-2 advantage at the 5:20 mark, beating Hrabal through a screen off a feed from Philip Törnqvist and Bucheler.

Bucheler then added his second tally of the night 10:48 into the second from Joel Maatta and Törnqvist on a shot that trickled through Hrabal.

The Catamounts added more insurance with Richards' shorthanded goal and empty netter that completed his hat trick at 6:32 and 18:10 of the third, respectively.

UMass finished the contest with a 33-23 shot advantage and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Vermont was 1-for-2.

Carriere ended the night with 31 saves for UVM and Hrabal (10) and Cole Brady (7) combined for 17 for the Minutemen.

UMass will return to action on Thursday, November 16, when the squad travels to Rhode Island to play #5/6 Providence on NESN at 7 p.m.
