#19 Massachusetts Hockey Battles #9 BU To 3-3 Tie
October 28, 2023 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 19 University of Massachusetts hockey earned a hard-fought Hockey East point on Saturday night at the Mullins Center, skating to a 3-3 tie with No. 9 Boston University. The Terriers went on to win the shootout, 1-0 to take the extra point in the league standings and are now 3-2-1 on the year (1-1-1 HE), while the Minutemen sit at 4-2-1 (0-1-1 HE).
"It was a really good bounce back by our guys tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought we played a really strong game. I thought the BU goalie stood on his head and made a lot of big saves for them, kept the game close and we shot ourselves in the foot a couple times. The penalties in the third period caught up to us, but I really liked our game. I really like this team. Last night was probably the first game this year that I wasn't happy with the group and they responded really well tonight."
UMass converted on its first power play chance of the night to take a 1-0 lead 9:37 into the first period. Freshman Jack Musa fired home his third of the year on a give-and-go from junior Scott Morrow and Kenny Connors.
BU came up with the equalizer midway through the second period when Luke Tuch received the puck from Sam Stevens and hit Devin Kaplan with a stretch pass as he exited the penalty box. Kaplan skated in alone on goaltender Michael Hrabal for the score to level things a 1-1 with 7:59 gone in the frame.
The Minutemen climbed back on top just before the second intermission as freshman Dans Locmelis stripped a Terrier of the puck along the half wall before turning and firing a shot past Mathieu Caron for his first tally of his collegiate career at the 18:39 mark.
Boston University took advantage of a power play opportunity to tie the score at 2-2, 5:20 into the third as Macklin Celebrini connected with a feed from Jeremy Wilmer and Ryan Greene, driving a one-timer into the back of the UMass net.
Freshman Aydar Suniev regained the lead for the Minutemen at the 9:45 mark, picking up the puck from Connors and whipping a shot home from the high slot.
However, the Terriers once again managed to pull level with UMass and force the extra frame. With 2:10 to play in the third, Celebrini took advantage of a screen in front, pocketing his second of the night from the left faceoff circle as Tuch and Cade Webber earned the assists.
After a scoreless overtime, BU's opening shooter Quinn Hutson was successful on his attempt for the lone goal of the shootout.
The Minutemen finished the contest with a 41-29 shot advantage and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Terriers were 1-for-3.
Hrabal ended the night with 26 saves for UMass and Caron turned aside 38 for Boston University.
UMass will be back in action next Friday, November 3, when the squad will host No. 18/17 Northeastern at the Mullins Center at 7:30 p.m.
