UMass Comeback Falls Short At George Washington, 81-73

RJ Luis finished with career-high marks in rebounds with eight and assists with five to go along with 13 points.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell at George Washington on Saturday afternoon in the Charles E. Smith Center, 81-73. The Minutemen (10-5 Overall, 1-2 Atlantic 10) stormed back to pull within five points late on a Keon Thompson 3-pointer but could not complete the comeback.
UMass held a 14-11 advantage with 12:29 left in the first after a 3-pointer from RJ Luis followed by a layup for Isaac Kante. Luis scored eight in the first half on 3-of-5 from the field with a pair of shots from deep and finished the game with career-high marks in rebounds with eight and assists with five to go along with 13 points.
The Colonials (8-8 Overall, 2-1 Atlantic 10) responded with eight unanswered points to take a lead that they held for the remainder of the afternoon. The run continued for over nine minutes as part of a 24-5 scoring run that saw the home team take a 35-19 advantage. GW built its lead to as many as 19 with two minutes to go in the half before a 5-0 scoring run from the Minutemen ended the half. The Colonials shot 80-percent from the line in the first half on 12-of-15 while the Minutemen attempted just one free throw in the opening 20 minutes.
UMass' run continued into the break and ended at 14-4 as the Minutemen came within single digits at 44-35 with 17:11 to go. The Minutemen once again got within single digits after falling behind by as many as 16 with 10:12 to go.
Luis helped spark a 10-0 UMass run to make it a six-point contest with 6:24 remaining. The freshman started the run with a three-point play before a slam followed by an alley-oop to Dyondre Dominguez brought the score to 64-58. T.J. Weeks Jr. knocked down a 3-pointer during the run and finished the game 3-of-6 from deep as part of 13 points.
After the Colonials pushed their lead to 13 points, the Minutemen rattled off eight unanswered points to get within five with just over a minute to go. GW answered with a dunk and a 3-pointer to go back up by 10 with 13-seconsd to play. James Bishop led the Colonials with 26 points while Hunter Dean and Ricky Lindo Jr. each posted double-doubles.
Noah Fernandes added 13 points and a team-leading six assists while Kante posted 12 points with seven boards.
The Minutemen return home to the Mullins Center for their next two games beginning with La Salle on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
