UMass Closes Out Game On 12-0 Run In 85-76 Win Over Richmond

AMHERST, Mass. – Head coach Frank Martin picked up his 300th career win as Massachusetts scored 12 unanswered points to close out the night in an 85-76 victory over Richmond on Wednesday evening at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen (12-8 Overall, 3-5 Atlantic 10) trailed by three with just over three minutes to go and ended the night on a 14-3 run over 3:36 of game time.

Freshman RJ Luis finished with a career-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists. Luis shot 50-percent from the field and went 9-for-10 from the free throw line, including 7-for-8 in the second half.

Rahsool Diggins jump started the game-sealing scoring run with one of his career-high four 3-pointers to tie at 76-76 with 2:42 to go. Diggins scored all 12 of his points in the second half and finished the final 20 minutes a perfect 4-of-4 from deep.

UMass gained a two-point lead a minute later on a Wildens Leveque one-handed slam off an alley-oop from Dyondre Dominguez to make it a 78-76 contest. RJ Luis followed with four straight points to stretch the lead to six before the Minutemen closed the game out at the free throw line. UMass shot 52-percent from the field over the final 20 minutes and went 7-of-10 from deep to finish the night at 48-percent from 3-point range.

The Minutemen started the night on an 8-0 run while holding Richmond without a field goal for the first 5:25 of game action. Richmond responded with an 8-0 run of its own to grab its first lead of the night at 17-16 and eventually stretched the lead to seven at 30-23 as part of a 13-2 run over 2:45. The Spiders shot 43-percent from the field and 40-percent from deep in the opening half and finished the game at 39-percent from the field.

Matt Cross reached double figures in scoring for the fifth consecutive game as he finished with 16 points and eight rebounds on the night. Isaac Kante joined three Minutemen in double figures with 10 points on 3-of-3 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line. Dyondre Dominguez pitched in eight points and six rebounds off the bench and went a perfect 8-of-8 from the stripe as UMass finished the night 24-of-28 from the free throw line.
