New Hampshire Tops #19/17 Massachusetts Hockey, 3-1

January 15, 2023 | Hockey

The Minutemen will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 20, vs. UConn at 7 p.m.

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 19/17 Massachusetts hockey dropped its Sunday afternoon matchup to New Hampshire, 3-1 at the Mullins Center. With the setback, the Minutemen are now 9-10-3 overall and 3-8-1 in Hockey East action, while the Wildcats move to 7-16-1 and 2-11-1 in league play.

"I really liked the start of the game tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "The first period was about as good as we've played in a long time. Obviously, we needed to find a way to put a couple pucks in the net. The goals that we did give up I felt were breakdowns by us and we just couldn't find a way to muster enough offense. I thought we had a lot of scoring chances tonight, pucks bouncing around the net front. Henry (Graham) did his job, made the saves he's supposed to. If we could play 60 minutes like we did the first 20, we'll be alright."

UNH opened the scoring 1:12 into the second period with Cy LeClerc collecting the puck from Damien Carfagna and Will Margel and driving to the slot to lift a backhander past Henry Graham.

UMass managed to tie the score at 1-1 at the 7:34 mark. Sophomore Scott Morrow took a feed from junior Elliott McDermott a the opposite point and sent a centering pass into the slot for freshman Michael Cameron. Cameron finished at the net front to extend his point streak to five straight and his goal scoring streak to three games.

The Wildcats pulled back in front early in the third, however. Stiven Sardarian picked off the puck from a Minutemen turnover in the neutral zone that set up an odd-man rush for UNH. Kristaps Skrastins drove to the net for the tally that gave New Hampshire the 2-1 lead, 2:15 into the stanza.

UNH later capped the scoring with an empty net goal by Alex Gagne off a clean faceoff win by Harrison Blaisdell at center ice at 18:35.

UMass finished the contest with a 28-24 edge in shots and went 0-for-1 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Wildcats netminder David Fessenden logged 27 saves and Graham totaled 21 stops for the Minutemen.

Massachusetts will return to action Friday, January 20, when the squad will host No. 11 UConn at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
