HANOVER, N.H. – Alec Hughes scored twice while Matt Zambetti came up with a season-high eight saves as the Massachusetts men's soccer team won its fifth consecutive match with a 3-1 victory at Dartmouth on Tuesday evening. The Minutemen (5-0-1 Overall) took a 2-0 lead in the opening 21 minutes and held a 2-1 advantage prior to a two-hour weather delay in the 33rd-minute.
Hughes netted both of his goals in the opening 21 minutes for his second multi-goal game in the last three contests. The junior added to his team-leading total in the 15th-minute with a shot from 40-yards out after Jack Englebert played it forward for Hughes, who chipped over the goalkeeper for the game's opening goal. Hughes added another six minutes later off a corner kick from Shizu Yohena, heading it in at the near post.
Dartmouth scored its lone goal of the night moments before the weather delay on a Kristian Feed score in the 32nd-minute. The Big Green held a 17 to 10 shot advantage on the night while the Minutemen put eight of their 10 shots on frame. UMass came into the game as the nation's leader in shots on goal percentage.
Brad Moccio put home his first collegiate goal in the 44th-minute to help the Minutemen to a 3-1 advantage. The sophomore headed one in at the near post after an Evan Fournier corner connected with Aidan Kelly at the far post for a shot that was saved and immediately headed in by Moccio.
Five of Zambetti's saves came in the final 45 minutes, including a stop on a breakaway opportunity from Dartmouth's James Wilson in the 59th-minute to keep it a two-goal game.
The Minutemen will begin Atlantic 10 play on Saturday at 7 p.m. on the road at VCU before returning to Rudd Field for non-conference action against UMass Lowell on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m.
