Women’s Soccer Set For Pair Of Home Matches Against In-State Foes

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team opens a three-game homestand this week as they host Boston College on Thursday and UMass Lowell on Sunday at Rudd Field. The Minutewomen take on the Eagles at 4 p.m. tomorrow before hosting the River Hawks on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Minutewomen picked up a 1-1 draw in their last match on Sunday at Robert Morris to wrap up a three-game road trip. UMass answered a Robert Morris goal just over two minutes later to tie with Ella Curry's second goal of the season in the 39th-minute. Curry sent a right-footed shot into the corner of goal after Maya Masotti headed a pass down and towards Curry for the goal.
UMass vs. Boston College/UMass Lowell
The Minutewomen hold a 15-3-1 all-time advantage over Boston College dating back to their first matchup in 1979. BC picked up a 3-1 win at home in the last game in 2021 with Lauren Smida scoring the lone UMass goal on an assist from Lauren Bonavita. The series with UMass Lowell is all square at 1-1-1 following the first meeting in 2019 while the Minutewomen recorded a 3-0 win a season ago behind goals from Lauren Robles, Karina Groff, and Chandler Pedolzky.
Massachusetts Leaders
Curry leads the Minutewomen on the season in goals with two and points with four as she has put all three of her shot attempts on target this season. Lauren Bonavita and Olivia Gouldsbury have each added a goal for the UMass attack while Ashley Lamond and Masotti have picked up assists. In goal, Megan Olszewski owns a team-leading 18 saves in 270 minutes of action.
Parking Advisory
Due to student move in on campus, this weekend's events will be effected with a new traffic flow and increased traffic on campus. Please arrive earlier than expected. Anyone looking to added the game on Thursday will need to enter campus off of 116 and make an immediate right onto Stadium Drive. Fan and staff parking for all events will be located at lot 14 (across from soccer/softball complex).
Welcome Back Ricky
Head coach Jason Dowiak officially announced the addition of assistant coach Ricky Newton back to the staff this week. Newton served three seasons with the MInutewomen as a volunteer assistant before returning this season as an assistant coach. Newton brings 15 years of coaching experience to Amherst after coaching in six different countries across three continents and most recently worknig with female athletes in the ECNL (Elite Clubs National League).
Looking Ahead
UMass remains at home following its matches against Boston College and UMass Lowell this week for a Thursday, Sept. 8 matchup against Boston University. The Minutewomen then hit the road for the final non-conference game of the season at Harvard on Sept. 11 before taking on VCU in the Atlantic 10 road opener on Sept. 15.
