Baseball Drops Series Finale, 6-1, To VCU

Minutemen recognized 18-man senior roster in ceremony prior to series finale.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball faced Virginia Commonwealth University in its final Atlantic 10 home game of the 2022 campaign and fell to the Rams, 6-1, at Earl Lorden Field on Sunday afternoon. Prior to the game, the program recognized its 18-man senior class, which included Matt Aronson, Zach Clevenger, Tyler Dalton, Drew DeMartino, Kevin Dow, Cole Hebble, Jared Henry, Dylan Judd, Scott LeSieur, Daniel Livnat, Steve Luttazi, Jack Pawloski, Michael Rounds, Collin Shapiro, Jack Steele, Christian Walsh, Aidan Wilde and Tucker Wittman.
UMass moves to 20-24-1 overall and 7-14 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, as VCU improves to 32-18 overall on the season, including a league record of 16-5.
Hebble recorded the lone run for UMass and registered one hit, while Judd also tallied a hit. Will MacLean had the only RBI for the Minutemen.
Massachusetts grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Hebble singled, before Kevin Skagerlind was hit by a pitch to take his base and move Hebble to second. A sacrifice bunt by DeMartino advanced both Hebble and Skagerlind to third and second base, respectively. With two in scoring position, MacLean hit a ground out to VCU's second baseman, allowing Hebble to cross the dish.
VCU brought the game to a 1-1 draw in the third but claimed a 3-1 lead after scoring two runs in the fourth. The Rams added another run in the sixth and two in the ninth to bring the contest to a final score of 6-1.
Zach Clevenger (1-3) received the loss for UMass, after he went four complete innings, and allowed three runs on five hits, walked one and dealt three strikeouts. For VCU, Mason Delane (2-1) had the win on the mound, only allowing one hit and striking out three in four innings of work. Jack Masloff earned his third save of the season, as he pitched three frames, walked one and struck out three batters.
Massachusetts will conclude its 2022 home slate on Tuesday, May 17, as the Minutemen host Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
