Baseball Falters At Dayton, 13-9

April 24, 2022 | Baseball

Six Minutemen had multi-hit performances, led by Hebble with four and Sloss with three.

DAYTON, Ohio – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped game three of the weekend series to the University of Dayton, 13-9, on Sunday afternoon at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium. Graduate student Cole Hebble tallied four hits in six at bats, while sophomore Jacob Sloss totaled three with five at bats, as four other Minutemen recorded multi-hit performances.

In addition to Hebble and Gervasi, Kevin Skagerlind, Mike Gervasi, Dylan Judd and Nolan Tichy all had two hits apiece. Sloss registered three RBIs, followed by Gervasi with two and Aidan Wilde with one on his solo home run. Hebble, Tichy and Wilde put up two runs on the afternoon, as Skagerlind, Judd and Sloss added one run each.

Dayton scored four runs in the first inning to pull ahead early. In the second, Wilde cranked the ball out over center field to get UMass on the board, but a three-run homer and a bases loaded walk gave the Flyers four more runs in the bottom half of the frame, extending their lead to 8-1.

Hebble scored on a passed ball in the third, before Skagerlind came home on a wild pitch to come back within five. The Minutemen added one more in the top of the fourth as Sloss singled through the left side to score Tichy to cut the deficit in half.

Dayton took back a run in the bottom of the fourth before scoring another in the fifth to push ahead 10-4. A two-RBI single from Gervasi late in the top of the sixth frame brought UMass back within four, but three more runs for the Flyers gave them a 13-6 lead.

In the seventh, Judd came across the dish on a wild pitch to make it a 13-7 contest, before a two-run single to right center from Sloss allowed Tichy and Wilde to touch home plate and come back within four. Both teams went scoreless in the final two innings, ending the game with a final score of 13-9, in favor of Dayton.

Daniel Livnat (1-2) pitched 1.1 innings for UMass, as he took the loss. Livnat gave up seven runs on six hits and walked one. Eli Majick (4-1) claimed the win for Dayton, allowing four runs, three hits, walking two and striking out two in 1.2 innings of work.

Massachusetts hosts Hartford on Tuesday, April 26, at Earl Lorden Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
