Kopec Leads Heptathlon After Day One At UConn Northeast Challenge

STORRS, Conn. – Several members of the Massachusetts track and field programs were in action at the UConn Northeast Challenge on Friday at the George Sherman Family Sports Complex. Kira Kopec highlighted the action for the Maroon & White as she leads a field of 11 competitors in heptathlon through four events with a score of 3,128.
 
Kopec started the day by posting a time of 14.35 seconds to claim the runner-up spot in 100 meter hurdles for 929 points, the fifth-fastest time in program history. She then took fourth in high jump after clearing 5 feet, 0.25 inches for 655 points. The Brooks, Alberta native finished the day one competition by winning shot put (42'0.75") and 200 meter dash (25.64) collecting 715 and 829 points, respectively.
 
Three Minutemen ran in the 10K, as well. Senior Joshua Rahn placed eighth in 30 minutes, 42.20 seconds, Benjamin Burgess finished 11th (31:47.93) and Surafel Mengist was 13th (33:17.44).
