April 13, 2022 | Baseball

Trio of Minutemen record multi-hit efforts in the victory.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first en route to an 11-4 win over University of Massachusetts Lowell on Wednesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Three Minutemen posted multi-hit efforts in the victory, led by graduate student Cole Hebble with four.

Hebble went 4-for-5, adding two runs and two RBI. Mike Gervasi followed with a season-high matching three hits, including a season best two doubles, and registering two runs and two RBI, while Drew DeMartino had two hits to go along with two runs of his own. Will MacLean, Jacob Sloss and Steve Luttazi contributed two RBI each, as Sloss recorded a two-run double. Michael Rounds also had an RBI double.

A solo home run for UMass Lowell put the River Hawks ahead 1-0 early in the top of the first inning, before Massachusetts put up seven runs in the bottom half of the frame. With the bases loaded, MacLean reached first base on a walk, sending Hebble around to home to knot the game up at one apiece. Sloss smacked the ball to left field for a two-RBI double, bringing both Gervasi and DeMartino in to score for a 3-1 lead. A two-run single from Luttazi allowed MacLean and Sloss to touch the plate, before a two-out, two-run single to center field from Hebble brought around Luttazi and Rounds to cap the seven-run inning.

After a scoreless second and third, the River Hawks tallied two runs in the fourth. The Minutemen totaled two more of their own in the fifth, after an RBI single from MacLean scored Gervasi, before a passed ball gave DeMartino the opportunity to steal home to make it a 9-3 contest.

UMass Lowell and Massachusetts traded a point each in the sixth, as UML earned a run on an RBI double, while Hebble came home off Gervasi's single to right center field to extend UMass' lead 10-4. The Minutemen notched one more run thanks to another RBI double by Gervasi that allowed Kevin Skagerlind to touch the plate to bring the game to its final score of 11-4.

Scott LeSieur (2-0) earned the win on the bump for UMass, pitching five complete innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out four. Jared Henry entered for the Minutemen going three innings, allowing one run on two hits, walking two and dealing a season-high four strikeouts. Brendan Williams (1-1) got the loss for the River Hawks, giving up six runs on three hits and walking three in 0.1 innings of work.
