Baseball's Contest At Northeastern Ends In 1-1 Draw

March 08, 2022 | Baseball

Rounds scored the only run for UMass, before the game came to a stop due to darkness.

Brookline, Mass. – Tuesday afternoon's game between the University of Massachusetts baseball team and Northeastern University finished in a 1-1 tie, after play was halted in the ninth inning due to darkness at Friedman Diamond. Senior Michael Rounds was the lone scorer for the Minutemen, reaching home plate in the final frame.

Drew DeMartino and Steve Luttazi led the team with two hits apiece, while Collin Shapiro registered one. Shapiro also had the only RBI for UMass.

UMass and Northeastern completed four innings scoreless, before the Huskies broke the drought in the fifth. With two outs, an error allowed Northeastern's Luke Beckstein to have an unearned run and score. The sixth, seventh and eighth innings remained quiet for both the Minutemen and Huskies, as neither team put up points.

In the top of the ninth, Rounds got to first base on a fielder's choice, before stealing second. After Aidan Wilde walked, Kevin Skagerlind reached his base on an error, advancing Rounds into scoring position and Wilde to second. Shapiro stepped up to the plate and was walked, sending Rounds to home.

The Huskies were at two outs in the bottom of the ninth, before the contest came to an end.

Tyler Dalton and Northeastern's Eric Yost each received a tie on the day. Dalton allowed one run on four hits, no walks and struck out five in five innings pitched. Charlie Devin spent two innings on the mound, walking two, while Zach Clevenger and Jack Pawloski each pitched one inning. Clevenger allowed one hit and had one strikeout, as Pawloski recorded two strikeouts. Yost went four innings for the Huskies, while four other pitchers came out of the bullpen for Northeastern on the afternoon.

Massachusetts will take on Penn State for a three-game series in Cary, North Carolina, at the USA Baseball Training Complex on Friday, March 11, through Sunday, March 13. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday's game will begin at 1 p.m., and Sunday's match up will start at 11 a.m.
