UMass Picks Up Overtime Win At George Mason, 83-80

Noah Fernandes scored a career-high 28 points in the overtime win.
FAIRFAX, Va. – Noah Fernandes scored a career-high 28 points as UMass picked up an 83-80 overtime win at George Mason on Saturday afternoon at EagleBank Arena. The Minutemen (14-16 Overall, 7-11 Atlantic 10) went on an 8-0 scoring run after falling behind by four with 1:40 left in overtime to secure the win.

UMass scored eight unanswered to take an early 8-3 lead while forcing George Mason into three turnovers in the opening moments of the contest. Noah Fernandes scored seven of his nine first half points in the first seven minutes and change as the Minutemen held an 18-14 lead.

George Mason shot just over 54-percent in the first half and used a 14-2 run over five-plus minutes to build a 25-20 lead over UMass as the Minutemen went through a cold stretch offensively. The Patriots extended their lead to 10 at 41-31 with the help of a 6-0 run and ended the first 20 minutes with a 41-33 advantage.

The Minutemen held the Patriots without a field goal for 4:30 of game time to get within a possession and eventually look a 60-59 lead on a Greg Jones slam with 5:54 left. Jones finished with nine points and nine rebounds in 35 minutes off the bench.

UMass held George Mason without a field goal for just over four minutes down the stretch before a Josh Oduro dunk with 2:27 left tied it up at 66-66 as regulation ended with the score knotted up at 68-68.

The Patriots went up by four points with 1:40 remaining before the Minutemen rattled off eight straight points to pull ahead 81-77 with eight seconds remaining. Fernandes started the scoring with one of his four 3-pointers before a Trent Buttrick jumper put UMass ahead by one. Buttrick finished with nine points and hauled in eight rebounds for a team that finished with a 45-35 rebound advantage over the Patriots.

Rich Kelly added 20 points of 6-of-11 from the field and went 7-for-7 at the line, including four down the stretch to ice the game.

With the win, the Minutemen secured a first-round bye at next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament in Washington, D.C.
