Boston College Edges #9 Massachusetts Hockey, 2-1

March 04, 2022 | Hockey

Wait scored the lone goal of the contest for the Minutemen, his 11th of the season.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 9 Massachusetts hockey led 1-0 after the first, put a third period power-play goal proved to be the difference in the 2-1 setback at Boston College on Friday night. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 19-11-2, 14-7-2 in Hockey East play, while the Eagles improve to 13-17-5 overall and 8-12-3 in league action.

"That was a hard-fought game as I expected it to be," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "BC's been playing well lately. I like the way we came out and started the game, the first period was solid, but, to me once we took the three penalties in the second period that really changed the momentum. They scored the game-winning on the power play and we had a hard time generating offense in the third period until late when we pulled the goalie. It was a good start to a road game, but the penalties to me were the big difference in the game."

UMass opened the scoring at the 16:52 mark of the first period as senior Bobby Trivigno collected the puck from sophomore Josh Lopina below the goal line and muscled his way to the front of the net to find senior Garrett Wait at the back post for a point-blank strike for his 11th goal of the season.

In the closing moments of the second period, the Eagles managed to tie the score at 1-1. Liam Izyk and Casey Carreau won a battle along the half wall and Trevor Kuntar fired the puck into the top right corner of the net at 18:28.

With a power-play carrying over to the third, Boston College converted just 28 seconds into the final stanza to go on top, 2-1. Jack McBain redirected a Jack St. Ivany shot from the point at the post for the tally. Carreau earned his second helper of the night on the play.

With the extra skater on and the UMass net empty, junior Reed Lebster put the puck into an open net amidst a scramble at the final buzzer, but upon review, time had expired.

The Minutemen ended the night with a 26-21 shot advantage and went 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Eagles were 1-for-3.

Matt Murray finished with 19 saves for UMass and Eric Dop turned aside 25 pucks for Boston College.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow, March 5, at 4:30 p.m. at the Mullins Center in a matchup that will be televised on NESN+.
