The Minutemen will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Hockey East Tournament and will await their opponent for next Saturday’s single-elimination quarterfinal matchup at the Mullins Center.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie the score midway through the third period, but Boston College responded with the deciding tally with under five minutes to play to hand UMass a 4-3 setback at the Mullins Center on Saturday night. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 19-12-2 on the season 14-8-2 in Hockey East play, while the Eagles improve to 14-17-5, 9-12-3 in league action.
"I knew it would be a tough weekend against BC," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "They've been playing well lately, but I thought we deserved a better fate tonight. I think we out-shot them 14-3 and 14-4 in the last two periods and find a way to tie the game and the way we gave up the game-winning goal is really frustrating to me. We get a good offensive opportunity, and we have one player who doesn't hang back as he's supposed to and that leads to the odd man rush and that's where BC's really good. They don't need many chances to score. We need a lot of chances to score and that's alright. That's what we are. The kids played hard; they played their hearts out. It's just a little frustrating the way we lost the game."
Jack McBain opened the scoring for Boston College 3:57 into the first, putting back a rebound from Marc McLaughlin and Brandon Kruse at the near post to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
BC then increased its lead to 2-0 at the 8:51 mark, converting on the power play as Patrick Giles redirected a puck past Matt Murray from the slot off a shot from Marshall Warren at the right point. Nikita Nesterenko picked up an assist on the play as well.
UMass took one of the goals back 12:35 into the period. Freshman Lucas Mercuri redirected classmate Ryan Lautenbach's shot past Eric Dop at the net front and junior Matthew Kessel earned the secondary helper.
Nesterenko made it a 3-1 margin for Boston College 1:48 into the third, finding the back of the net on an odd-man rush set up by Colby Ambrosio and Giles.
The Minutemen pulled back to within one moments later courtesy of a power-play goal by senior Anthony Del Gaizo, who tipped home Kessel's shot from the perimeter at 3:17. Sophomore Aaron Bohlinger logged the secondary assist.
Freshman Scott Morrow leveled the score at 3-3 at the 10:09 mark, picking up the puck off an offensive zone faceoff win by sophomore Josh Lopina and lofting a shot over Dop through traffic.
The Eagles responded, however, with Giles keeping the puck himself on a 3-on-1 and going top shelf over Murray at 16:38.
UMass out-shot Boston College 45-21 on the night and went 1-for-5 on the power play, while BC was 1-for-3. Murray made 17 saves for the Minutemen and Dop totaled 42 saves for the Eagles.
