Setting the Scene
The University of Massachusetts baseball hits the road to play Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J., for three games at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. Game one will be on Friday, March 18, beginning at 3 p.m., while game two is set for Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m. On Sunday, March 20, UMass and FDU close out the weekend series with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.

The Minutemen and Knights will meet for the first time in program history on Friday afternoon, marking the second time this season UMass has matched up against an opponent for the first time (Georgetown – 3/4/22).

Recap in a Minute
UMass picked up two straight victories, defeating Navy on Tuesday, 4-3, in Annapolis, Maryland, and UMBC on Wednesday, 10-5, in Baltimore, Md.

At Navy, the Minutemen broke a 3-3 tie early in the eighth inning to edge out the Midshipmen on the day. Four Minutemen recorded two hits each, highlighted by a double apiece from Dylan Judd and Nolan Tichy. Drew DeMartino contributed a double of his own to bring around the go-ahead run, while DeMartino, Judd, Christian Walsh and Kevin Skagerlind all had one RBI.

A seven-run second inning allowed Massachusetts to take the early lead at UMBC, which saw Will MacLean register his first collegiate hit, before the team added three more in the third. Five Minutemen had multi-hits, including a 3-for-4 clip for Aidan Wilde, including a triple, while Skagerlind, Mike Gervasi, MacLean and Cole Hebble all contributed two hits each. Gervasi recorded a triple of his own and had two RBIs, as Skagerlind led with four RBIs. Wilde, MacLean and Hebble all came across home plate twice.

Zach Clevenger took the victory at Navy, as Jack Pawloski earned his fourth save of his career. Scott LeSieur picked up the win at UMBC.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2022 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 139th season. Twenty-seven members of the team are back from the 2021 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including five freshman and three transfers.

 Commonwealth Connections
  • Assistant Coach Steve Adkins spent two seasons on staff at Fairleigh Dickinson, before coming to UMass.
  • Graduate student infielder Cole Hebble and FDU freshman pitcher Brenden Katz both reside from Miami, Florida.

It's Going, Going, and It's Gone
The Minutemen have tallied five homeruns in the first nine games, from four Minutemen. Steve Luttazi leads the team with two followed by Mike Gervasi, Hebble, and Tichy with one each. Luttazi had a stellar first game with two homeruns including a grand slam, and Gervasi was the only homerun in the team's second meeting with Georgetown.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2022 season marks the 56th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fifth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
Massachusetts returns to Earl Lorden Field for its home opener on Tuesday, March 22, welcoming Holy Cross for a 3 p.m., contest.
