February 09, 2022 | Women's Basketball

Ngalakulondi finished with a career best 20 points.

OLEAN, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball team came away with its ninth road victory of the year after defeating St. Bonaventure University, 78-59, at the Reilly Center on Wednesday night. Four Minutewomen finished the night in double figures, as Angelique Ngalakulondi led with a career-high 20 points.

UMass improves to 18-5 on the year, including 6-3 in the Atlantic 10 conference, while St. Bonaventure moves to 12-10 overall and 4-7 in the league.

In addition to Ngalakulondi's 20 points, Ber'Nyah Mayo (18), Sam Breen (14) and Sydney Taylor (11) all reached double digits. Breen also added to her double-double total this season, earning her 14th of the year and 37th of her career, after coming down with 10 rebounds. Mayo went 6-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, while Taylor made three of her eight three-pointer attempts. Taylor tallied a game-high four steals, tying her career best, as Breen and Destiney Philoxy each had six assists.

Massachusetts shot 70.0 percent from the charity stripe, making 7-of-10. The Minutewomen outrebounded the Bonnies, 38-28, and had more points in the paint (46), second chance points (17) and fast break points (five) over their opponents.

The Minutewomen and Bonnies knotted the score up at three apiece early on in the first quarter, before UMass went on a 9-1 run to take an 11-4 lead. After a pair of made free throws by Mayo, Massachusetts and St. Bonaventure traded two points for a score of 15-8. A Philoxy jumper and a Makennah White layup added to the Minutewomen's lead, before Mayo hit one from behind the arc to make it a 22-9 game. In the final seconds, the Bonnies added one more point, as Mayo added two more to close out the quarter, 24-10.

At the start of the second quarter, St. Bonaventure cut its deficit in half, 24-12, at the 9:46 mark, but Mayo and White combined for four points to make it a 28-12 contest. Michelle Pruitt came down with the offensive rebound at the 6:25 mark and collected two points to aid Massachusetts to a 15-point lead. The Bonnies began an 8-0 run that elapsed for two minutes and nine seconds to bring them back within seven, before Taylor knocked down a triple for a 33-23 lead. The two teams traded four points each, but with 24 seconds left in the first half, Mayo drained a three to bring the score to 40-29.

Ngalakulondi accumulated four points at the start of the third quarter to push the Minutewomen ahead, 44-31. With UMass maintaining its lead, the team got out to a 15-7 run, capped by a Ngalakulondi layup at 2:24. The Minutewomen pushed ahead to their largest lead of the third, with 1:52 remaining, at 61-43, making it an 18-point game.

The final frame saw much of the same from Massachusetts as the team got out to a 21-point lead, its biggest of the game, on a Philoxy free throw, and again on made layup by Ngalakulondi. With one second on the clock, St. Bonaventure scored on a driving layup, but the Minutewomen held their own to bring the game to its final score of 78-59.

UMass will begin a three-game homestand on Friday, February 11, when the team welcomes George Mason to the Mullins Center. The Minutewomen and the Patriots tip off at 12 p.m. on NESN.
