Men’s Hoops Falls On The Road At Dayton

Michael Steadman scored a team-high 14 points for the Minutemen.
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell on the road to Dayton 82-61 at UD Arena on Wednesday evening. The Minutemen (12-14 Overall, 5-9 Atlantic 10) return home to the Mullins Center on Saturday to host VCU at 4:30 p.m. in a Blackout game.
Michael Steadman scored six of the first nine UMass points to help the Minutemen answer a 6-0 Dayton scoring run to start the game with a quick 5-0 run of their own. Steadman finished the half with 10 points and wrapped up the evening with a team-high 14 points.
The Flyers built a 30-16 lead and shot 13-of-17 from the field to start the game while finishing the first half 69-percent from the field to UMass' 30-percent. Dayton owned a 46-23 advantage at the break after holding the Minutemen without a field goal for the final 7:09 of the first.
Rich Kelly ended the field goal drought with a jumper with 16:28 left in the game and scored all nine of his points in the second half. The Minutemen got going offensively with 10:00 remaining, knocking down seven of their next nine shots, but Dayton maintained a 27-point advantage. UMass shot nearly 47-percent from the field over the final 20 minutes to outscore the Flyers in the half and finished at 40-percent for the game.
UMass strung together an 8-0 run over 90-seconds down the stretch to bring the score to 78-59 in favor of Dayton. T.J. Weeks and Preston Santos both put home 3-pointers during the run as part of six made by the Minutemen in the half.
C.J. Kelly added 11 points and four assists off the bench for the Minutemen while Javohn Garcia finished with eight.
Koby Brea and Mustapha Amzil led five Flyers in double figures with 16 points each on the night as Dayton shot 57-percent for the game and nearly 59-percent from 3-point range.
