Trivigno collects his 37th and 38th points of the season in the loss for the Minutemen.
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 10/9 University of Massachusetts hockey erased an early 1-0 deficit, but No. 20 UConn scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Minutemen, 4-2 at the Mullins Center on Saturday night. The loss leaves UMass at 17-10-2 overall and 12-6-2 in Hockey East, while the Huskies improve to 17-12-0, 13-7-0 in league action.
"The big difference in the game was special teams," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "UConn did an excellent job frustrating us on the power play and then they scored two power-play goals pretty easily. So, to me, that was the big difference. I thought the team came out and played really well. I thought the UConn goaltender stood on his head at times, made some big-time saves. I thought we played pretty darn good, we out-shoot them 37-17, a lot of good things, but congrats to UConn. That's a good hockey team, but I thought our kids played pretty fair, the puck just didn't bounce our way tonight."
UMass carried the play in the opening period, but a late 5-on-3 helped UConn to a 1-0 lead at the break. John Spetz finished off a cross-ice feed from Jachym Kondelik and Ryan Tverberg at 17:33 to put the Huskies on the board.
Right off the opening draw of the second period, senior Bobby Trivigno knotted the score at 1-1, collecting an outlet pass from classmate Garrett Wait and freshman Ryan Ufko, skating into the UConn end and snapping the puck past netminder Darion Hanson, 12 seconds into the frame.
Just 51 seconds later, sophomore Josh Lopina rifled home a shot from the slot from sophomore Aaron Bohlinger and Trivigno to put the Minutemen on top, 2-1.
Before the close of the period, however, the Huskies tied the score at 2-2. Tverberg tipped in a shot from John Spetz on the power play at the 8:26 mark with Carter Berger picking up the secondary assist.
Then 6:59 into the third, period, Hudson Schandor took the puck from Tverberg and Harrison Rees and drove to the net for the go-ahead tally that put UConn up, 3-2.
The Huskies later added some insurance at the 18:45 mark courtesy of Marc Gatcomb, set up by Tverberg and Kondelik.
UMass went 0-for-5 on the power play in the contest, while UConn was 2-for-5. Matt Murray had 13 saves for the Minutemen and Hanson finished with 35 stops for the Huskies.
The UMass will be back in action next Friday, Feb. 25, when the squad will open up a two-game set against Vermont in Burlington at 7 p.m.
