#9 Massachusetts Hockey Falls To Maine In Overtime, 3-2

February 11, 2022 | Hockey

Trivigno finished the night with a goal and an assist for the Minutemen, his eighth multi-point game of the season.

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 9 University of Massachusetts erased an early 1-0 deficit, but Maine ultimately defeated the Minutemen in overtime, 3-2 at the Mullins Center on Friday night. The loss leaves UMass at 15-9-2 on the season, 10-4-2 in Hockey East, while the Black Bears improve to 5-16-4 and 3- 12-2 in league action.

"Congrats to Benny, his team played very hard as I expected they would," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Knowing who he is, I knew his players would want to play hard for him tonight in this situation. Maine came out and was the better team in the first period. The last two periods we played alright; the third period was our best period. We didn't get enough pucks around the net in third period to find that goal. It's inexcusable that their second and third goals were scored on breakaways that we just didn't make the effort to stay above. That was the difference in the game."

Maine was on the board first as Lynden Breen's one-timer went off the iron and in with Jakub Sirota and David Breazeale collecting the assists on the power-play tally at the 8:56 mark of the first period.

UMass responded shortly after on a power-play of its own. After an offensive zone faceoff win, senior Bobby Trivigno sent the puck up to the point and freshman Ryan Ufko found senior Garrett Wait at the net front for the equalizer 11:08 into the frame.

Trivigno then put the Minutemen in front, 2-1, just 22 seconds into the second period, picking off a puck from a Black Bears' defender and skating in alone on Victor Ostman for the score.

However, Maine answered at the 7:01 mark with Ben Poisson lifting a shot over goaltender Matt Murray after Breen sprung him on a breakaway, leveling the score at 2-2.

Breen later set up another break in overtime, this time Donavan Villeneuve-Houle was the recipient of the feed and potted the game winner 1:03 into the extra stanza.

UMass finished the night with a 27-25 edge in shots and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Black Bears were 1-for-2.

Ostman finished with 25 saves for Maine and Murray stopped 22 in net for the Minutemen.

The two teams will conclude their weekend series tomorrow, February 12, at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center, a matchup that will air on NESN.
