Women’s Basketball Finishes Non-Conference Slate With 77-58 Victory Over Dartmouth

Breen recorded her seventh double-double of the year and career-high five steals.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball defeated Dartmouth College, 77-58, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. UMass wrapped up its non-conference schedule, improving to 10-3 on the season. The Minutewomen garnered its first win over the Big Green since November 28, 2000.
Sam Breen led the way for the Minutewomen with her seventh double-double of the season and 47th of her career, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ber'Nyah Mayo and Makennah White followed close behind with 17 and 15 points, respectively, while Sydney Taylor also tallied her 10th double figure contest of the season, putting up 12 points on the night. Breen also recorded a career best five steals and Mayo totaled a game-high seven assists.
UMass shot 51.6 percent (33-of-64) from the field and went 72.7 percent (8-for-11) from the charity stripe. Massachusetts outrebounded Dartmouth, 38-32, and totaled 56 points in the paint.
Dartmouth scored the first basket of the night at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter, before Ber'Nyah Mayo made two free throws to knot the game up at 2-2. The Big Green jumped to a 6-2 lead, but the Minutewomen grabbed five points, including a triple from Sydney Taylor, to claim a 7-6 lead. Dartmouth began a 6-2 run to lead 12-9 with three minutes and 16 seconds left in the first, but Makennah White scored on a layup, drawing the and-one to bring it to a 12-12 tie. The two teams tied again at 14-14 at the 1:36 mark, before the quarter ended with Dartmouth edging Massachusetts, 17-16.
Massachusetts went on a 14-6 run in the second quarter that lasted seven minutes and 21 seconds, to take a 30-23 lead. UMass tallied three more points to Dartmouth's two, heading into halftime with a 33-25 lead. The Minutewomen held the Big Green to only eight points in the second, while White and Breen combined for 11 of Massachusetts' 17 points.
UMass continued a run from the second quarter, going 16-3, extending its lead to 46-28. The Minutewomen earned eight more points, while the Big Green registered seven, closing out the third quarter with a Massachusetts 54-35 lead. Both teams put up 23 points apiece in the final frame, but UMass was able to maintain the lead and come out on top, 77-58.
Massachusetts begins Atlantic 10 Conference play on Saturday, Dec. 31, when it welcomes St. Bonaventure to the Mullins Center for a 2 p.m. contest on NESN+/ESPN+.
