Breen’s Career Day Aids Women’s Basketball to 74-51 Victory Over St. Bonaventure In A-10 Conference Opener

December 31, 2022 | Women's Basketball

Breen records first career triple-double, becoming the second Minutewomen in program history to achieve the feat.

AMHERST, Mass. – A career day from graduate student Sam Breen helped the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team to a 71-54 win over St. Bonaventure University at the Mullins Center on Saturday afternoon. Breen recorded her first career triple-double with 11 points, 14 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists, becoming only the second Minutewomen in program history to achieve the feat in 22 years, since Jennifer Butler on Nov. 17, 2000.

The Minutewomen improve to 11-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Bonnies move to 3-13 on the year, including 0-1 in conference play.

In addition to Breen, four other Minutewomen reached double figures, led by Sydney Taylor with 16 points. Makennah White followed with 13 of her own, while Ber'Nyah Mayo and Destiney Philoxy also tallied 11 points along with Breen. Breen totaled a game best 14 boards and 11 assists, as Mayo finished the day with a game-high five steals.

UMass outrebounded St. Bonaventure, 46-33, and scored 38 points in the paint and 23 off turnovers. The Minutewomen shot 75.0 percent (9-of-12) from the charity stripe on the afternoon.

Massachusetts began the contest on an 8-0 run, before St. Bonaventure scored at the 7:05 mark. The Bonnies grabbed six more points for an 8-0 run of their own to knot the game up at eight apiece. The Minutewomen reclaimed the lead at 12-8, but St. Bonaventure jumped back ahead by two. With 50 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the two teams were tied up once again at 14-14. The Bonnies knocked down a triple to end the quarter with a 17-14 lead over UMass.

The Minutewomen came back within one thanks to a layup from Mayo, before a Stephanie Kulesza layup pushed UMass into an 18-17 lead. After the two layups, Massachusetts went on a 14-4 run to close out the first half with a 32-21 lead over the Bonnies.

UMass and St. Bonaventure traded six points apiece in the first two minutes and 49 seconds of the third, with the Minutewomen holding on to a 38-27 lead. St. Bonaventure started to climb back, closing the gap to only six points at 44-38 with 2:33 remaining in the quarter, but an 8-0 run for Massachusetts, including a made layup from Taylor at the buzzer, put the team ahead by 14 points, finishing the third with a score of 52-38.

Philoxy continued the run in the final frame, bringing it to an 11-0 run, extending the lead to 55-38. The Minutewomen kept rolling in the fourth, tallying 19 more points to the Bonnies 13 in the fourth to earn the 74-51 victory over St. Bonaventure.

Massachusetts will host Rhode Island on Wednesday, Jan. 4, as part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. on NESN/ESPN+.
