Massachusetts Women’s Basketball Breezes By Saint Peter’s, 81-34

Three Minutewomen reach double figures, as White earns second career double-double.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball breezed by Saint Peter's University, 81-34, on Wednesday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The 47-point victory marked the first since December 22, 2021, when UMass took down Hartford by 46 points.
 
Sydney Taylor led the way with 17 points on the day, followed by Makennah White and Sam Breen with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Taylor went 5-for-13 from the field, including knocking down 5-of-12 from beyond the arc. White also led the team with 11 rebounds, tying her career-high and recording her second double-double of her career. Destiney Philoxy dished out a game-high seven assists, with Ber'Nyah Mayo and Alexzeya Brooks registering five apiece. Brooks' five dimes marked a career best. Mayo added a team best six assists, while Breen had a total of three blocks.
 
UMass shot 45.6 percent (31-of-68) from the field and went 68.8 percent (11-for-16) from the charity stripe. Massachusetts outrebounded Saint Peter's, 52-29, and totaled 26 assists as a team.
 
UMass grabbed an early 2-0 lead, but Saint Peter's tallied back-to-back buckets, including a three-pointer, to take a 5-2 lead. Taylor knocked down a triple of her own to knot the game up at 5-5. Taylor's basket began a 16-4 run for the Minutewomen to close out the first quarter leading 18-9.
 
Massachusetts started the second quarter with a 14-0 run that lasted three minutes and 24 seconds, extending its lead to 32-9, while the Peacocks scored their first basket at the 5:52 mark with a made free throw. Both teams recorded nine more points apiece, with UMass holding a comfortable 41-18 lead heading into halftime. Taylor made four three-pointers, totaling 12 of the Minutewomen's 23 points in the quarter.
 
Out of halftime, the Minutewomen went on an 18-0 run for four minutes and 54 seconds, to push ahead 59-19. Saint Peter's was able to add five more points to its total to UMass' four, but Massachusetts held on, leading 63-24 at the end of the third quarter.
 
The Minutewomen tallied 18 more points while the Peacocks scored 10 in the final frame. UMass went on a 6-0 run in the final three minutes and 47 seconds to seal the deal and win 81-34.
 
Massachusetts hosts Dartmouth for its final non-conference contest on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at the Mullins Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on NESN+/ESPN+.
