AMHERST, Mass. - The Frank Martin era begins tomorrow as the Massachusetts Minutemen host Central Connecticut State inside the Mullins Center. The Minutemen and Blue Devils tip off the 2022-23 regular season at 7:30 p.m.

Massachusetts In The Opener
The Minutemen have won 12 straight season openers dating back to a win over Rider to begin the 2010-11 season. UMass picked up a 77-60 win over UMBC in last year's season opener behind 16 points from T.J. Weeks Jr. and 12 from Noah Fernandes.

The Martin Era Begins
Frank Martin was tabbed as the new head man at UMass on March 25 following 10 seasons as the head coach at South Carolina. Martin led the Gamecocks to a new program record for wins in a single season and coached the team to its best NCAA Tournament run in program history, a trip to the Final Four in 2016-17. The 15-year college head coach also led Kansas State for a 29-8 record and an Elite Eight appearance during the 2009-10 season.

The Transfer Portal
UMass returned just five players from last year's roster and welcomed in seven transfers and two freshmen to the team for this year. Two players from South Carolina made the move with Coach Martin to UMass in Wildens Leveque and Brandon Martin. Massachusetts native Matt Cross returned to the Commonwealth after spending last year at Louisville while Gianni Thompson made the move from Boston College. Big man Isaac Kante transferred in from LIU with former top-50 recruit Rahsool Diggins from UConn.

They're Coming Home
Multiple Massachusetts natives returned to The Bay State to play for Frank Martin and the Commonwealth's Flagship University during the offseason. Wildens Leveque (Brockton) and Matt Cross (Beverly) both returned to their home state and joined fellow natives Noah Fernandes (Mattapoisett), Gianni Thompson (Newton), and Ryan Marcus (Wakefield).

Fernandes On Fire
Senior guard Noah Fernandes ended his junior campaign a season ago with 26 points, four rebounds, and four assists against Dayton in the A-10 Tournament. Fernandes poured in a career-high 29 points to go along with seven boards and four assists in a win over George Washington in the previous round. The guard also added 28 points in an overtime win at George Mason in the regular season finale.

Looking Ahead
The Minutemen host Towson on Thursday in the Mullins Center before a week break followed by five straight games away from home. UMass plays in the Myrtle Beach Invitational on Nov. 17-20 and eventually returns home to take on UAlbany on Dec. 5.

Hall of Fame Events
Massachusetts will play a pair of games in events run by the Basketball Hall of Fame, including one in their backyard on Dec. 17 against North Texas in Springfield, Mass. The game against the Mean Green tips off at 3 p.m. in the MassMutual Center as part of the Hall of Fame Classic. The Minutemen also take on Hofstra at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Dec. 11 as part of the Hall of Fame Invitational.
