Six Minutemen Finish In Double Figures In Season-Opening 94-67 Win Over CCSU

AMHERST, Mass. – Six Minutemen finished in double figures as the Frank Martin era for Massachusetts began with a 94-67 win over Central Connecticut State on Monday night in the Mullins Center. T.J. Weeks Jr. led the Minutemen with a team-high 16 points while Dyondre Dominguez added 15 points off the bench to tie his career-high.

UMass used a 12-0 run to end the first half to take a 41-33 lead into the break after CCSU took its largest lead of the night at 33-29 with 3:09 to go in the opening frame. Noah Fernandes capped off the run with a 3-pointer to beat the halftime whistle as he finished 3-of-4 from deep with 11 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

The run continued into the second half for the Minutemen and finished as 16 unanswered points saw UMass extend its lead to 45-33 with just over 19 minutes to go. The Minutemen shot a blistering 72-percent from the field over the final 20 minutes and nearly 54-percent for the game.

Dominguez helped the Minutemen extend their lead to 18 points around the 12-minute mark with six straight points, capping off the stretch with an offensive rebound and a putback to bring the score to 61-43. Dominguez finished his night 7-of-10 from the floor with seven rebounds.

Massachusetts posted a 48-29 advantage on the boards led by Fernandes' eight to go along with seven from Brandon Martin and six for Isaac Kante. Kante added 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

Freshmen RJ Luis and Keon Thompson each finished in double figures for the Minutemen, with Luis scoring 14 in his first career start while Thompson pitched in 10 points and five boards off the bench.

The Minutemen continue non-conference play at home with a Thursday matchup against Towson at 7 p.m.
