#9/8 Massachusetts Hockey Nipped By #17 Providence, 2-1
January 28, 2022 | Hockey
Trivigno scored his 12th of the season, the lone goal in the setback for the Minutemen.
AMHERST, Mass.– No. 9/8 Massachusetts hockey scored late in the third to tie things up at 1-1, but No. Providence answered just nine seconds later to edge the Minutemen, 2-1 on Friday night at the Mullins Center. The setback leaves UMass at 12-8-2 on the season, 9-4-2 in Hockey East play, while the Friars improve to 17-9-2, 8-7-1 in league action.
"The game went as I expected," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Seems like every time we play those guys it's a 1-0, 2-1, game. I thought we were just OK through two periods. Obviously when we got behind, I thought we picked it up and the kids played real hard and that was a great goal by Bobby to tie the game, but I'm just really frustrated with letting up a goal nine seconds after we worked so hard to tie the game."
The teams played through two evenly matched periods with Providence hitting iron twice on power play opportunities in the second, but the squads entered the third in a scoreless deadlock.
Riley Duran put Providence on top 2:17 into the final stanza as the puck came to him in front off Max Crozier's shot wide that rebounded off the end boards. Cody Monds earned an assist on the play, as well.
Senior captain Bobby Trivigno tied the score at 1-1 at the 16:09 mark, picking up the puck from freshman Scott Morrow and driving to the slot where he lofted his 12th of the season past Jaxson Stauber.
The celebration was brief, however, as Duran netted his second of the night from Monds at the 16:18 mark to put the Friars back on top for good.
UMass finished the night with a 32-28 advantage in shots and went 0-for-2 on the power play, while going a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Graduate student Matt Murray totaled 26 saves in net for the Minutemen and Stauber had 31 stops for Providence.
The Minutemen will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 30, taking on No. 14 UMass Lowell at 1:05 p.m. in Lowell at the Tsongas Center.
