Boston University Outlasts #9/8 Massachusetts Hockey, 6-4

January 25, 2022 | Hockey

The Minutemen made it a one-goal game in the third, but came up just short of the comeback.

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 9/8 University of Massachusetts hockey battled back from a 4-0 deficit to pull within a goal of Boston University, but the Terriers held on to defeat the Minutemen, 6-5 on Tuesday night at the Mullins Center. The loss leaves UMass at 12-7-2 on the season, 9-3-2 in Hockey East action, while BU improves to 12-10-3 overall and 8-6-3 in league play.

"I think we were a little guilty of being complacent after an easy win on Saturday night," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I tried to tell the team that BU hadn't lost in nine or 10 games and we were going to get a good opponent. I thought BU was very opportunistic in the first period, we weren't playing great. It seemed like every chance they got was in the back of the net. I give the kids credit, they fought back. I thought the second half of the game we played pretty well and I thought we were going to find a way in the third period, especially after we scored the fourth goal. The puck was basically in their end the whole period. I thought we were wearing them down, just can't dig yourself a 4-0 hole and expect to win. If we start games better, we'll be in good shape. Tonight we didn't start very well."

BU opened the scoring 10:53 into the first with Logan Cockerill whipping a shot past goaltender Matt Murray from the right faceoff circle off a feed from Max Kaufman.

The Terriers then doubled their lead with Sam Stevens starting an odd-man rush that Matt Brown finished shorthanded at 16:49.

BU added a third tally with just seven seconds remaining in the opening frame as Robert Mastrosimone redirected in a puck at the doorstep from Brown and Wilmer Skoog to increase the margin to 3-0.

The Terriers opened the second with their fourth of the night as Ty Gallagher and Brian Carrabes won battles to keep the puck in the UMass zone and Ethan Phillips fired a shot past Murray to chase the Minuteman netminder from the game 3:32 into the period.

UMass responded moments later with Anthony Del Gaizo converting on the power play from junior Matthew Kessel and senior Ty Farmer at 5:37.

Then just 26 seconds later, freshman Ryan Ufko and sophomore Josh Lopina sprung senior Bobby Trivigno on a breakaway as the captain netted his 11th of the year to bring the Minutemen within 4-2.

Cockerill put BU back up by three, scoring off a Ty Amonte faceoff win at the 10:49 mark, but then freshman Scott Morrow responded with an unassisted tally for his ninth of the year 18 seconds later to close the gap to 5-3.

Kessel made it a one-goal game when his shot from the top of the slot ricocheted in off a Terrier in front with sophomores Aaron Bohlinger and Ryan Sullivan picking up the assists at 9:28 in the third.

Kaufman sealed the victory for BU, however, with an empty net goal 19:21 into the final stanza.

UMass finished with a 36-28 shot advantage and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Terriers were 0-for-3.

Commesso made 32 saves for Boston University. Murray and freshman Luke Pavicich tallied 14 and eight stops, respectively.

UMass will be back in action on Friday, January 28, vs. #17 Providence, at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
