Men's Soccer Picks Up 2-1 Win On The Road At UMass Lowell

Filippo Begliardi Ghidini headed home the game-winning goal in the 103rd-minute to secure the 2-1 win.
LOWELL, Mass. – Graham Brenner headed home his first goal of the season to give the UMass men's soccer team a 2-1 win at UMass Lowell in double overtime on Tuesday evening. The Minutemen (5-2-1 Overall) posted a 22-11 shot advantage and put 11 attempts on target, including two in the second overtime period.
UMass was on the front foot early as it took less than a minute for them to get their first shot attempt on target as Filippo Begliardi Ghidni headed one at the near post that was saved by UMass Lowell's Christian Miesch. The Minutemen attempted 10 of their shots in the first 45 minutes with the River Hawks attempting seven in the first half.
UMass Lowell got on the board in the 22nd-minute with one of those shots, a goal scored by Borna Miklic to put the home team ahead 1-0.
Andrew Ortiz scored his first collegiate goal in the 42nd-minute to tie it at 1-1. The freshmen received a low free kick in from Ben Shepherd and got it on his right foot for a curving shot over the River Hawk keeper and into the back of goal.
The UMass defense settled in during the second half and overtime periods, allowing just one shot on target in the final 40-plus minutes of action that came in the 70th-minute on a shot by German Fuentes that was saved by Marvyn Dorchin. Dorchin finished with five saves in goal for the Minutemen.
Brenner's game-winning goal in the second overtime period came by way of Shepherd's second assist of the evening, a free kick sent in towards the near post for a Brenner header.
The Minutemen resume Atlantic 10 action Saturday with a 5 p.m. kickoff on the road at Saint Joseph's.
