Men’s Soccer Remains Unbeaten On The Road, Defeats Saint Joseph’s 2-1

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team claimed its first Atlantic 10 win and remained unbeaten on the road with a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's at Sweeney Field on Saturday evening. The Minutemen (6-2-1 Overall, 1-1-0 A-10) allowed just two shots on goal and put seven of their 10 shot attempts on target.
UMass jumped ahead 1-0 in the ninth-minute on Filippo Begliardi Ghidini's fifth goal of the season. The Minutemen took advantage of a quick change of possession as James McPherson played a touch pass to Yosuke Hanya, who found Begliardi Ghidini on a run down the middle before the forward got around a defender to set up the right-footed strike.
Nick Zielonka scored his first collegiate goal in the 50th-minute to give the Minutemen a 2-0 advantage after a Saint Joseph's defender ran into the goalkeeper, allowing the ball to bounce to Zielonka for a left-footed shot into the back of goal.
Saint Joseph's trimmed the lead down to a goal in the 70th-minute after Garrett Lyons converted on a penalty kick to Marvyn Dorchin's right as the keeper dove to his left. The shot marked the first attempt on target for the Hawks in the game before Dorchin picked up a save on the second shot on target in the 84th-minute.
The Hawks applied some late pressure on the UMass defense as Omry Perel hit the post early in the 90th-minute before Lyons did the same 30-seconds later prior to a clearance that allowed the clock to run out.
The Minutemen continue their four-game road trip on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Yale.
