Opening Week
The Minutemen picked up a draw and a win as they opened up their 2021 fall campaign at home against Northeastern on August 26. UMass responded quickly after surrendering a penalty kick to the Huskies, tying the game at 1-1 less than 20 seconds after the penalty kick in the eventual draw. On Monday at Sacred Heart, Joe Leslie put home two goals in the second half to secure a 2-0 win for the Minutemen.
The Opponent
BU comes into Friday's match with a 0-2 record after falling to No. 20-ranked New Hampshire 2-0 and to BC 2-1. Quinn Matulis scored the Terriers goal against BC while Francesco Montali has logged all 180 minutes in goal for BU and has nine saves.
Joe Leslie's Brace
Sophomore forward Leslie put home two goals in Monday's win at Sacred Heart to help the Minutemen to a 2-0 road win. Leslie scored his first collegiate goal from the penalty spot in the 59th-minute with a panenka in which he sent the Sacred Heart goalkeeper to his right before chipping the ball into the center of goal. The sophomore added his second goal to cap off the afternoon in the 88th-minute as he curled a right-footed shot around the keeper and into the right side of goal.
Among League Leaders
Leslie's two-goal night puts the sophomore second in the Atlantic 10 in goals early in the season while ranking him fourth in points. Filippo Begliardi Ghidini, who assisted on Leslie's second goal Monday, ranks tied for second in the A-10 in assists. Marvyn Dorchin owns the top goals against average for any goalkeeper in the league with more than one game played and ranks fourth in save percentage.
Looking Ahead
The Minutemen return home for their next four matches following Friday's game at BU. UMass returns home for the first of four straight on Sept. 8 against Central Connecticut State before hosting Vermoont on Sept. 11 at 1 pm. as part of Hall of Fame/Alumni Weekend.
