Men’s Soccer Falls To #24 Saint Louis In Atlantic 10 Opener

September 18, 2021 | Men's Soccer

James McPherson and Filippo Begliardi Ghidini scored for the Minutemen.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team led late but fell to No. 24-ranked Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 opener on Saturday at Rudd Field. The Minutemen (4-2-1 Overall) took the lead in the 79th-minute on a Filippo Begliardi Ghidini before the Billikens scored two over the final eight minutes of play.

Graham Brenner helped keep Saint Louis scoreless in the 25th-minute, dropping back to clear a shot off the line after UMass goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin came out to force a shot from SLU's John Klein.

The Minutemen took a 1-0 lead in the 44th-minute on a James McPherson goal from Andrew Ortiz. Ortiz made a run down the right side of the field and played a cross to the near post for McPherson, who connected for a header into the right side of goal.

Saint Louis quickly answered off a set piece in the final seconds of the first half as Chris Bruch scored to tie it up at 1-1 heading into the break. The Billikens attempted 10 shots in the first half with four on goal before being held to four in the second half.

UMass attempted six of its nine total shots in the final 45 minutes, putting three on goal in the second half. Begliardi Ghidini's goal in the 79th-minute was set up by Alec Hughes, who took the ball on the right of the 18-yard box and played a low cross to Begliardi Ghidini, who slid it by SLU's Patrick Schulte to put UMass ahead 2-1.

The Billikens' Kipp Keller tied it up in the 83rd-minute on a right-footed shot from range that curled into the right side of goal before Simon Becher scored the game-winner in the 85th-minute to bring the score to a 3-2 finak.

The Minutemen break from Atlantic 10 action for a Tuesday night matchup at UMass Lowell before resuming conference play on Saturday at Saint Joseph's.
