Recap in a Minute
UMass and Fordham split last weekend's four-game series as the Maroon and White won the first and third games down in the Bronx.

In game one, Fordham came across the plate first in the fourth inning, before UMass knotted it up with a Dylan Judd RBI single that scored Kevin Skagerlind in the sixth. A sacrifice fly for the Rams put them up by one in the seventh, but a rally in the eighth gave the Minutemen the momentum for the rest of the afternoon when Chris Pearsons, Skagerlind and Eddy Hart all scored to secure a 4-2 victory. Left-hander Scott LeSiuer picked up his first win as a Minutemen and Zach Clevenger earned his second save of his career and first since the 2018 season.

The Minutemen plated six runs in the first two innings of game three of the series, holding on to the lead for the remainder of the contest. The first run came in on a double steal from Collin Shapiro, as the Rams catcher fired the ball to third to nail Shapiro, but the throw got away and allowed Shapiro to come home. In the second frame, the Maroon and White capitalized on two more errors, in addition to an RBI single by Steve Luttazi, a two-run double from Hart and an infield single for Judd. UMass picked up two more runs in the fifth and seventh inning to go on and win 8-3. Zack Given went 5.2 innings for Massachusetts, scattering six hits and three walks against five strikeouts, before Jared Henry entered the contest to complete the final 1.1 innings.

  • Sophomore southpaw Jack Pawloski and Eagles junior Sal Frelick both hail from Lexington, Massachusetts, and attended Lexington High School.
  • Sophomore Michael Rounds is a Milton, Massachusetts native, as is BC freshman Patrick Roche. Rounds and BC freshman pitcher Joey Ryan both went to Roxbury Latin High School.
  • Sophomore infielder Christian Walsh and BC sophomore outfielder and pitcher Barry Walsh both reside from Sterling, Massachusetts.
  • Freshman Kevin Gower, BC graduate student Dante Baldelli and freshman Brad Lombardi all attended Bishop Hendricken High School.

[Judd]-ging by the Long Ball
Sophomore Dylan Judd sits atop the leaderboard for the Minutemen in home runs, recording six so far this season. Judd collected his first two collegiate homers on back-to-back at bats during the 10-1 triumph at Towson on March 21. The game saw Judd tally four runs on three hits, one walk and five RBIs. His most recent home run came in the 9-8 victory against Merrimack where Judd had two runs on as many hits, one walk and three RBIs.

The Oceanside, New York, native clubbed three others, with one each at Holy Cross (March 31), UConn (April 3) and Saint Joseph's (April 9). Judd is currently riding a 14-game reached base streak, dating back to the Merrimack game on April 14.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2021 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 138th season of competition. Twenty-two members of the team are back from the abbreviated 2020 campaign, while thirteen players are in their first season in Amherst, including seven freshmen and six transfers. A complete roster is available here.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2021 season marks the 55th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fourth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
The Minutemen remain at The Earl when they host Atlantic 10 rival St. Bonaventure on Friday, May 14-Sunday, May 16 for a four-game series. Friday's contest is slated for a 3 p.m. start, Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m. and Sunday's finale is set for 12 p.m.

Due to the ever-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, game dates, times and opponents are subject to change. The best way to remain on top of schedule updates is via the official UMass baseball schedule page, as well as the team's social media accounts (@UMassBaseball).
