Massachusetts Falls to Rhode Island in Series Opener

Minutemen bats pick up later in contest, but are unable to erase big first inning for URI
Right fielder Kevin Skagerlind and catcher Mike Gervasi each contributed two hits, including Gervasi's third home run of the season as the Minutemen combined for 10 hits on the day.
Gervasi put Massachusetts on the board with one swing of the bat in the second inning, taking a 2-2 pitch over the left-center field fence, and Michael Rounds followed up with an RBI single in the third. Gervasi, shortstop Chris Pearsons and third baseman Josh Petrucci knocked in runs as part of a four-run fifth, but ultimately the squad could not erase a seven-run first inning for Rhode Island.
Zack Given took the start for the home squad and despite receiving the loss was not charged with an earned run. Given was relieved by Tommy Koide after one inning, followed up by Scott LeSieur (3.2 innings) before Rounds moved from designated hitter to the mound for the balance of the game.
For Rhode Island, the win went to Ryan Twitchell and Todd Moxey earned a save.
