Women’s Track & Field Fourth After Day One At New England Championships

Figueroa medals in hammer, Perkowski sets a new top-five all-time mark in the 10k

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – University of Massachusetts women's track & field sits fourth in the team standings following day one's action at the New England Championships at Central Connecticut's Veterans Stadium. The Minutewomen have 25 points through seven scored events, while Rhode Island leads the pack with 51 points. UMass collected a bronze medal in hammer and saw a new top-five all-time mark set in the 10K on Friday.
 
Freshman Cheyenne Figueroa took third in hammer throw with a toss of 172 feet, 11 inches. UMass had two more scorers in the field, as well, with Anna Cozzolino placing sixth in javelin (132'4") and Lea Doerries claiming sixth in high jump (5'4.25").
 
Senior Lauren Perkowski captured fourth in 10,000 meters, running 36 minutes, 53.53 seconds for a new No. 3 all-time mark in the UMass record book. The Minutewomen landed two in the scoring in the 5,000 meter run as freshman Lily Robinson (17:11.83) and sophomore Grace Phair (17:32.74) were fourth and sixth, respectively.
 
UMass sent four on to Saturday's finals on the track. Freshman Lillian Kirry posted a time of 1 minute, 2.42 seconds in 400 meter hurdles to take second in prelims and sophomore Alexandra Gonet was seventh in 1 minute, 4.31 seconds. Senior Jada Harris was third in the 100 meter hurdles prelims at 14.73 seconds and Faith Richardson earned a spot in the 100 meter dash finals with a seventh-place time of 12.54 in prelims.

In heptathlon, Kira Kopec totaled 2919 points on day one, winning shot put (40'9.75", 690 points) and 200 meter dash (26.10, 788 points). She was the runner up in 100 meter hurdles in 15.08 seconds (831 points) and took sixth in high jump (610 points), clearing 4 feet 10.5 inches.

Action resumes on Saturday, May 15, at 10 a.m. with decathlon 110 meter hurdles.
