Minutewomen battle challenging conditions on water in final tune-up before A-10 Championships
BOSTON – University of Massachusetts rowing returned to the Charles River Basin on Saturday for its second straight competitive action, facing Boston College, Boston University and Dartmouth. It marked the final action for the Minutewomen before the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championships, slated for May 15.
"First of all, a big thanks to Boston College for hosting us today," said head coach Eric Carcich. "The biggest theme of the day for our crews was building momentum off this race and into our final two weeks prior to A-10s. In our final tuneup before our A-10 championships, we also celebrated our seniors, who have led our team with incredible commitment and dedication through this unprecedented year."
UMass began the morning racing in a Varsity 8 field of four crews. Tight through the 1,000-meter mark of the race, the Minutewomen punched the bow ahead of a very talented Dartmouth crew, besting the Big Green by 0.4 seconds (7:52.307) and closing the gap on BU for second place.
In a new 2V8 lineup, UMass pushed ahead from BC and pressed the leading boats but were out powered by the rough conditions. Ultimately the Maroon and White clocked in a time of 8:15.790 for third place.
Although facing slow and challenging conditions, the 3V8 held with Dartmouth through the 1,000-meter mark and used a gritty effort to place second (8:34.056).
In racing against Dartmouth, the Minutewomen crossed paths with program alumna Nancy LaRocque, a 1997 UMass graduate now serving as head coach at Dartmouth.
