Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 4 Win Races At Lake Quinsigamond

April 18, 2026 | Rowing

UMass raced against Boston College, Holy Cross, UConn, MIT and Sacred Heart on Saturday

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Massachusetts rowing team took on Boston College, Connecticut, Holy Cross, MIT and Sacred Heart in a round of racing on Saturday morning at Lake Quinsigamond.

The UMass Varsity 8 (6:29.5) and Second Varsity 4 (7:35.6) won their races, while the Second Varsity 8 placed second (6:53.0). The Varsity 4 placed third (and 7:33.9).

"It was another good step this weekend against some fast competition after a short week of training at home," head coach Eric Carcich said. "Really happy with how all our boats performed especially after working through some late lineup changes due to injuries. All boats outside the Varsity 8 were altered, so it was a great opportunity to test our depth and our ability to plug and play. The Varsity 8 breaking the 6:30 time barrier with a time of 6:29.5 regardless of the winds was awesome to see. MIT and BC pressed them, so it was great to see the V8 stay calm under pressure and get their bow ball well clear of all opposing teams to end the morning with the win."

UMass also fielded a pair of Third Varsity 8 boats.

"It was really exciting to be racing a 3V and 4V beyond the A4 and B4," Carcich added. "We have been working towards this type of depth for a long time now so to see it on race day was special for the staff and team. Now we have four weeks to go, we will keep building speed and chemistry as we prepare for the final climb!"

UMass returns to racing at Lake Quinsigamond as part of the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 3.
