Beech equalizes on third quarter penalty stroke, Ang buries game-winner in 68th minute
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – University of Massachusetts field hockey rallied to earn a crucial 2-1 victory in overtime at Lock Haven's Charlotte E. Smith Field on Saturday.
The Minutewomen are 6-2 following the victory and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while Lock Haven is now 2-1 both overall and in the league. It is UMass' sixth win in its last seven games, and, dating back to 2019, the seventh A-10 win in the last eight contests.
After LHU went ahead 1-0 in the 41st minute, sophomore Jess Beech netted the equalizer on a penalty stroke in the 48th minute. Junior Sophie Johnson fed the ball into the circle where it bounced around and came to the stick of classmate Mus Defauwes. As Defauwes corralled the ball near the baseline she was tripped up by LHU goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini, leading to the stroke call. Beech calmly stepped to the penalty spot and tucked her fourth goal of the season into the left corner.
UMass had chances at a potential game-winner in the fourth quarter with three penalty corners, but could not find the back of the cage.
Just over seven minutes into the overtime period, freshman Josephine Ang buried the deciding tally. Beech intercepted a Lock Haven outlet pass and quickly turned to Ang, already in the middle of the circle. Ang's one-timed sweep snuck through Orlandini and vaulted Massachusetts into celebration with the game-winner. It was Ang's fourth goal of the season and second game-winner.
In goal, freshman Brooke Richards recorded one save for UMass in the victory and Orlandini also tallied one stop for the Bald Eagles.
Massachusetts now returns home to face No. 11 Boston College in a Wed., April 7 game set for 4 p.m. at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
