Richards makes six saves in loss
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts field hockey hosted Boston College at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex for midweek non-conference action but fell to the No. 13-ranked Eagles, 5-0, on Wednesday. The loss dropped UMass to 6-3 overall while BC improved to 6-5 on the season.
Rookie goalie Brooke Richards turned aside six Boston College shots, including her third penalty stroke save of the season. Jonna Kennedy played the opening three quarters in net for the Eagles and earned the win. Emily Gillespie replaced Kennedy for the fourth quarter.
The Eagles outshot the Minutewomen, 15-5 and held an 8-3 advantage in corners. Five different Minutewomen attempted a shot: Josephine Ang, Emily Crawford, Katherine Furry, Bella Ianni and Steph Gottwals.
BC took the lead with a goal at the six-minute, 51-second mark and doubled its lead during the second quarter when Margo Carlin netted her first of two on the day. The Eagles tacked on insurance tallies in the 41st, 44th and 50th minutes of play.
Richards earned her penalty stroke save with a stick-stop on Sky Caron during the 51st minute. Caron fired a shot to Richards' right as Richards lept to the side, extended her right arm and batted the ball away. She finished with one stop each in the first and fourth quarters and four in the third frame.
Massachusetts plays next on Sat., April 10 with a 4 p.m. game against La Salle at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. It marks Senior Day for the Minutewomen.
