UConn Takes Doubleheader from Minutemen

April 03, 2021 | Baseball

Judd finishes triple short of the cycle in game one, Luttazi homers in the nightcap

STORRS, Conn. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to UConn in both games of the teams' doubleheader on Saturday at the Huskies' Elliot Ballpark. The Minutemen return to action with a Wed., April 7 game playing host to Northeastern at 4 p.m. from Earl Lorden Field.

Game 1
UConn 11, UMass 1
Dylan Judd led the Minutemen at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 and a triple short of hitting for the cycle, but UConn starter Austin Peterson largely kept the squad at bay and UMass could not recover from a five-run bottom of the third for UConn.

Judd's team-leading fourth home run of the season came to lead off the fourth inning on a 2-0 pitch. UMass also put runners in scoring position in the second and sixth innings thanks to doubles from Eddy Hart and Judd, but the Minutemen were unable to push any additional runs over the plate.

UConn added two runs in its half of the sixth, one in the seventh and closed out the game's scoring with a three-spot in the eighth.

Southpaw Zack Given worked four innings in the loss, and Peterson went six innings in his start for the win.

Game 2
UConn 7, UMass 3
Steve Luttazi blasted his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot in the sixth inning, but the Minutemen could pull no closer. Luttazi also doubled to center field in the second inning, finishing 2-for-3 in the six-hole before Nolan Tichy pinch hit for Luttazi later in the ballgame. Dylan Judd also contributed a two-hit performance.

UConn took a 1-0 lead in its half of the second inning and used a six-run fourth to put the game out of reach.

Left-hander Daniel Livnat (1-1) pitched four innings in the start for the Minutemen, striking out three.  UConn's Joe Simeone earned the win with five innings of two-hit shutout ball.
