Minutemen Drop Opener at UConn

Hart and Skagerlind provide doubles; doubleheader slated for Saturday at noon
STORRS, Conn. – University of Massachusetts baseball was defeated, 9-2, in the team's series opener at UConn's Elliot Ballpark on Friday.
Massachusetts' pair of runs came in the top of the eighth, thanks two a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Kevin Skagerlind. Pinch hitter Kevin Gower followed by left fielder Collin Shapiro each drew two-out walks, before Erik Foster pinch ran for Shapiro. A wild pitch with Skagerlind at the plate moved the runners to second and third ahead of Skagerlind's two-RBI knock.
UConn scored one run in each of the first three innings, before adding three-spots in the sixth and seventh frames.
The Minutemen looked to have opportunities with a leadoff single from Chris Pearsons in the third inning and an Eddy Hart double to start the fifth, but Pearsons was caught stealing and Hart was left at second with UConn retiring the next three batters in order.
Starting pitcher Jack Steele received the loss for UMass, working 5.2 innings and responsible for five earned runs on eight hits, plus two strikeouts. Jared Henry, Spencer Bergeron and Zach Clevenger also saw the mound for the visitors. Ben Casparius picked up the win for the Huskies.
The sides wrap up the weekend with a doubleheader on Sat., April 3 beginning at noon from Elliot Ballpark.
