UMass Battles in Beantown with BU, Northeastern

Minutewomen return to the Charles on May 1
BOSTON – University of Massachusetts rowing was on the Charles River Basin on Sunday morning for races against Boston University and Northeastern and faced gusting headwinds throughout, creating long races for all crews involved.
UMass' Varsity 8 opened the morning at 10 a.m. with a strong performance, but were outgunned in the headwind and finished third behind Northeastern and BU with a time of 7:19.056. A gritty finish for the 2V8 answered a start that saw UMass fall about a length behind the Terriers crew, ultimately crossing the finish line about five second behind BU (7:41.219) in third place.
The Varsity 4 was toe-to-toe with Northeastern in the tightest battle of the day, powering through and just 0.4 seconds behind the Huskies for first place (8:32.4). In the 2V4 with a total field of four crews, UMass trailed Northeastern in the first half of the race, but around the 1,000-meter mark UMass turned up the volume and pulled in front, winning by open water and clocking in at 8:34.397 in a tremendous effort from the Minutewomen.
The Minutewomen will get back to work on the Connecticut River on Tuesday and are next are in competition on Saturday, May 1, returning to the Charles for racing against Boston College. Due to the ever-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, race dates, times and opponents are subject to change.
