Epic Second Half Rally Falls Just Short at St. Joe’s

Minutewomen defeated by Hawks, 5-4, at Ellen Ryan Field
MERION STATION, Pa. – Down 5-0 midway through the third quarter, University of Massachusetts field hockey waged a furious comeback effort down the stretch but came up just short of the equalizer, falling to Saint Joseph's, 5-4, on Saturday at Ellen Ryan Field in the Atlantic 10 regular season finale for both sides.
Sophomore Jess Beech had two goals for Massachusetts in the loss, and classmate Steph Gottwals along with senior Georgie McTear tallied one goal apiece.
After the Hawks carried a 4-0 lead at halftime and extended the advantage in the 38th minute, Beech put UMass on the board two minutes later being awarded a penalty stroke. Called on a penalty corner shot that beat SJU goalkeeper Robin Bleekemolen and headed for the back of the cage, the ball caromed off of a Hawks player behind Bleekemolen. On the ensuing stroke, Beech went low on Bleekemolen for the tally.
Beech added her sixth goal of the second and second of the day in the 48th minute on a corner rebound. Inserted by graduate student Amelie Green to freshman Claire Danahy, Danahy left the ball for McTear who set up a one-timed shot by junior Mus Defauwes. The rebound came right to Beech's stick for a perfect thread between Bleekemolen and a Hawks defender.
UMass pulled within two with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Beech inserted a corner to Gottwals, leaving the ball to sophomore Bella Ianni. Ianni found McTear with space, and a low rocket from McTear found its way through traffic and into the cage for McTear's team-leading seventh goal.
With freshman goalkeeper Brooke Richards lifted for an extra field player, Gottwals brought the squad within one with 54 seconds left. Off a restart following three Massachusetts penalty corners, Beech fed the ball back into the circle setting up a turnaround shot by Gottwals that bounced through the circle and past Bleekemolen, her first goal of the season.
UMass regained possession after the goal as a long St. Joe's aerial left the Minutewomen with a 16-yard hit. But as the Minutewomen trekked up field the Hawks forced a turnover and reentered its attacking third, ultimately drawing a corner with one second left and sealing the 5-4 result.
For the game, the Minutewomen held the advantage both in shots on goal (8-5) and penalty corners (11-8).
