Men’s Soccer Finishes Tied For Third In A-10, Ranks 15th In NCAA RPI Heading Into Match At #25 VT

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team finished the 2021 Atlantic 10 league schedule in a tie for third with a 3-1-2 mark in conference play and a 7-1-2 record on the season. The Minutemen head to Virginia Tech this weekend for a Saturday matchup against the Hokies.

High-Powered Offense
The UMass offense finished second in the A-10 in goals per game at 2.30 and ranks T-13th nationally in scoring offense. The Minutemen also ranked 15th in goal differential having outscored their opponents 23-10 on the season. UMass also holds nationally rankings of 19 in assists per game.

Midfielders Among National Leaders
UMass' midfielder Ben Shepherd ranked fifth nationally in assists and eighth in assists per game after dishing out seven during the regular season. Fellow midfielder Yosuke Hanya also ranks 12th in the country in assists and 15th in assists per game with six on the year.

Freshman Forward
Freshman forward Alec Hughes scored an Atlantic 10-leading seven goals on the season, which also ranks him 12th-nationally in total goals. Hughes had two multi-goal performances in league play to held him earn A-10 Player of the Week and A-10 Rookie of the Week honors throughout the season.

A-10 Awards
The Minutemen placed four on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference teams, led by 2021 A-10 Rookie of the Year and first-team all-conference selection Hughes. Hughes was joined on the first-team by Hanya and defender Graham Brenner while Ben Shepherd earned second-team honors.
