LEONIA, N.J. – University of Massachusetts rowing returned to the water on Saturday as the Minutewomen took to Overpeck Park to race against Atlantic 10 rivals George Washington, Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's, along with crews from UConn and Manhattan.
Â
"First of all I'd like to thank Manhattan College for hosting us today," said head coach Eric Carcich. "Overall a quality start from UMass women's rowing where we were able to see where we stack up amongst some of our peers. Getting out first race under our belt was incredibly important, but also built some confidence that we are heading in a good direction as we head towards the Atlantic 10 Championships in a few weeks. Congrats to the URI women who stood out on top today as we found ourselves in a very competitive cluster with GW and St. Joe's. We've come a long way in our first month back on the water and we're looking forward to getting back to work on Monday."
Â
In the morning races, UMass' Varsity 8 took second place with a time of 6:50.8, just over a second behind St. Joe's (6:49.5). The Minutewomen crossed the finish line first in the 2nd Varsity 8 (7:01.8), Varsity Four (7:57.8) and 2V4 (7:56.2).
Â
Placed into the 'A' Final for the afternoon, the Minutewomen 2nd Varsity 8 turned in a third-place effort (7:02.6) before the V4 clocked in second (7:49.6), as did the 2V4 (8:05.2). In the 'B' Final, Massachusetts' Varsity 8 boat handily took the top spot with a time of 6:51.3, a whole 12 seconds ahead of UConn.
UMass will head back to the water on Sat., April 17, racing on the Charles River in Boston against Boston University and UConn.
